Located in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area, the city of Martinez is known for its large number of antique shops and beautifully preserved old buildings. Marinez is the county seat of Contra Costa County and home to nearly 40,000 residents. Established in 1849, Martinez is one of the oldest towns in California. While many folks passing by on I-680 think of the refinery operations that dot the north side of town, Martinez is known locally for its historic downtown. From breweries and gastropubs to antique shops and more – the charm of Martinez is missed from the highway.
The Martinez Regional Shoreline makes up the north edge of the city - providing amazing views and a huge marina with deep water access to The San Francisco Bay and beyond, as well as a major Amtrak station.

The city Martinez can be defined as a more densely built downtown with suburban areas stretching south of Highway 4 to join the neighboring city of Pleasant Hill. Unincorporated areas include the rural Alhambra Valley and the Franklin Canyon area. Notable for its large number of preserved old buildings, the downtown includes the Art Deco Martinez Library, registered as a landmark for architectural considerations. Martinez is the birthplace of Joe DiMaggio, the famous New York Yankee slugger, and also the "martini," invented by a Martinez bartender in 1874.

Area Transportation
- Amtrak runs its San Joaquins line to Southern California and Capitol Corridor line to Sacramento and San José through stations in Richmond, Martinez, and Antioch-Pittsburg.
